So You Want to Start a Business

Starting your own business is awesome!  But there is a lot of risk involved and it’s important that you set your company up right from the start so don’t inadvertently set yourself up for a mess. You also want to make sure your personal assets are always protected in the event the company has legal problems.

I will walk you step-by-step through the process you should go through to create your business – including everything you should do before Day 1 and everything you should do within the first 30 days. I’ll discuss business entity options, how to keep your corporate veil intact, and what contracts you’ll need both in-house and for use with your clients and vendors. We’ll also discuss how to identify your company’s intellectual property (which is likely its biggest asset) and how to protect it.

I will also share helpful tips and tricks, including what you can do by yourself and what tasks you should leave to the professionals.

This is an excellent topic for new startups, entrepreneurs, co-working spaces, and business incubators. In a lot of ways I still consider myself one of you. I started Carter Law Firm right out of law school on a shoestring budget and I still run a lean operation to keep my overhead costs low.

Over the last two years of working with business owners one thing I’ve seen over and over again is that it’s easier to bring in a little help to make sure you get your business started on the right foot than to have to clean up the mess that results when you don’t.
